Diggers Hotline proudly announces the impressive milestone of processing 25 million locate requests since being formed in 1976. This achievement, which occurred on May 20, shows the commitment Diggers Hotline has made through the years to help keep Wisconsin residents safe.
Anyone excavating or digging in Wisconsin is required by law to file a locate request with Diggers Hotline.
Diggers Hotline is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to promoting safety to its users and helping prevent damage to underground utility lines since its inception. Diggers Hotline emphasizes a high level of customer service provided by a knowledgeable and helpful staff.
The journey to 25 million locate requests has demonstrated Diggers Hotline’s ability to adapt to evolving needs. When Diggers Hotline first started, a handful of operators took locate requests manually. Now a team of customer service representatives takes locate requests 24/7 either from the phone or from one of the online portals. In fact, over 68% of 2023 locate requests were filed online.
Homeowners, landscapers, and professional excavators are all required by law to contact Diggers Hotline, either online or by dialing 811, at least three business days prior to digging. After submitting a locate request, Diggers Hotline notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent out by the utilities to the requested dig site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with spray paint or flags.
Diggers Hotline now has over 1,400 utility members and processes more than 980,000 locate requests annually. In addition to sending locate requests to utility members, Diggers Hotline also provides educational resources to promote the prevention of damage to underground utility lines.
